Swahili Lesson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today I am telling you about some words of Tanzanian common language of Swahili. I had been very curious about Swahili language before I visited Tanzania for the first time. I\u2019d never imagined there were actually some words that sounded just same as Japanese particular words and were known to in Japan but not realized as Swahili. For non-Japanese speaker it may be difficult to share these feelings, sorry!  I hope you enjoy it and learn Swahili and Japanese. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safari<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This word is used for the name of a zoo park in Japan. How about your country?  Safari means \u201cGame drive\u201d or \u201cTrip\u201d. Honestly names of zoo with \u201cSafari\u201d give me images of driving to observe animals in the parkland. How about you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hakuna Matata<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know a song of \u201cHakuna Matata\u201d from \u201cThe Lion King?\u201d This phrase translates to \u201cNo problem,\u201d but it means more than that. It\u2019s an optimistic way of saying, I guess. e.g.) No worries! All right!  Or never mind!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilipili<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was my first dinner in Tanzania that I met this word at. Pilipili means pepper in Swahili. It\u2019s also used for \u201cHot!!\u201d or \u201cSpicy!\u201d \u201cPilipili\u201d is used by both of Swahili and Japanese speakers when we get hot on our tongue. I was so surprised that a Tanzanian friend of mine said Pilipili.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barabara<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a car on a way to somewhere, my friend told the direction to a driver, I heard this word several times. I made a check it had been \u201cBarabara\u201d that she had said in real, and she admitted and told me it was a \u201croad.\u201d It was funny to hear this word several times during her directions. In Japanese language Barabara is used when one object gets fallen into some pieces. This is a word of reminding me of something broken into pieces accidently that is sadness. Unconsciously I grinned during her directions because it\u2019s a contradiction between what I feel for this word and what I faced to in real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Swahili language is possibly familiar to Japanese as well, 10% of Tanzanians speak little bit of Swahili or don\u2019t but do their own tribal language. They inhabit the most interior parts of Tanzania, rarely communicate outside their community. They preserve a very unique way of living.  I will tell you them next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
