Tanzanian’s Comfort Food No.1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today I’m going to tell you about Tanzanians’ comfort food Ugari. Ugari is one of staple food eaten in Kenya and some other east African countries. It seems very common to have dough made of maize flour over Africa, although its name differs depending on areas or countries. For me, getting used to Japanese culture, Ugali is so unfamiliar that many questions come up on my mind. I’m going to tell you in the two articles about Ugali knowledge that I’ve learned through three visits. Today’s topic is how to prepare. Let’s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Tanzanian student helping us through our project invited us to their dinner, I asked them to show how to prepare. The kind chef started to boil water, pour maize flour into boiling water and mix the liquid-dough with a wooden spatula. Letting liquid-dough boil again, add some more flour. Switching the spatula to a wooden stick like a rolling pin, stir the liquid-dough with massive power. The liquid lost water into sticky dough. The stick runs so quickly between the sticky and heavy dough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About half hour passed from the start, I could smell something nice and well-grill. When the nice smell turned into burned that made me anxious, the pod was take off a fire. And, the chef put the pot upside down on a plate. On taking a pot away, I found a well-known round shape of Ugali there! Now, I’ve comprehended how the round shape is being made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the answer to the question is “B. By turning over a pot !” Next time I’m going to tell you how the locals eat Ugali. Stay tuned, Thank you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
