　今日は、前回に引き続きタンザニアで困ったなあ…と感じることをご紹介していきます。前回の渡航を思い出しながら、また自分を勇気づけられればという想いも込めて共有させていただきます。

　私的にタンザニアの困ったこと　その２は…水回り事情

　タンザニアに行くまで、ホテルの客室においてバスルームがここまでセンシティブな問題だと思っていませんでした…。疲れた身体でホテルに入り、シャワーを浴びて早く寝ようと思ってシャワールームの扉を開ける…。そんな時に受けるカルチャーショックは、他のどんなシチュエーションで遭遇するそれよりも凄まじい力があるのではないかと、今は感じています。まさに私の疲れがピークに達したホテルのバスルームでそれは起きました。バスルームの扉を開けると、”バスマットの上に置かれたビーチサンダル”が目に飛び込んできました。私はこの光景を目にし、撃沈してしまいました…。

今回このブログを書くに当たってタンザニア人の友人にこのビーチサンダル事情を聴いてみました。わかったことは、このホテルのビーチサンダルの置き場所がちょっと変だったのかもしれないことと、シャワーとトイレが同じ部屋にある点でこのサンダルはとても役立つ、ということです。通常、バスルームの入り口にこのサンダルは置いてあり、トイレ回りは不潔なのでこのサンダルに履き替えてトイレに行くそうです。そして、サンダルを履いてシャワーを浴びるのだそうです。サンダルを履いているのでシャワーを浴びた後、バスルーム内のフロアを素足で歩くことなく、バスマットまでたどり着けるそうです。説明を受けて、別のホテルでバスルームの入り口付近に置かれたサンダルとバスマットの意味がわかりました。

Today I am going to tell you about the continued theme: What upset me in Tanzania. As I recall the last time, I would like to encourage myself. And, let me share my feelings.

When I am puzzled No.2 is… bathroom

I had never put attention on bathroom when it come to choosing accommodations until I stayed in Tanzanian hotels. And now, I have learned how tremendous power it has when I am worn out and have culture shock. I even guess the power in this situation is far greater than in any other situation… Please imagine yourself when you are so tired, make checked-in at a hotel and feel like to going to bed shortly after shower, and then you open the door and walk into the bathroom. There, you’ll find beach sandals on the bath rug.

These sandals on the bath rug might not overwhelm you. In Japanese culture, a house has a designated area where people must get shoes off. I have a keen sense for that: the outside house is out of my control, unclean and uncomfortable, inside it’s under control, clean enough and comfortable. Hopefully this logic might help you understand. Sandals are ones to be put on outside and I don’t think it’s clean enough . For me, a bath rug is equipment inside the house and it should be clean to be used after shower.

I was really wondering how it should be used and asked my friend. The things I’ve got are that the place where sandals were put would have been unusual, and it is quite useful in the sight of shower and toilet existing in the same room. She says there are usually both sandals and a bath rug close to the bathroom door, and around the toilet it is not clean and people change shoes for sandals when using the toilet. And even for showers they use sandals. They don’t have to walk in the bathroom with bare feet and hopefully reach the bath rug. We also in Japan have slippers for the toilet and the toilet and the shower are equipped individually. I am neither willing to walk around shower room on bare feet. With that sense, slippers in the bathroom are probably a nice one to keep my feet clean. 🙂 I’ve also got another understanding. When I stayed at another hotel and found sandals and a bath rug close to the door, I really wondered how come the bath rug and sandals were equipped there…、 but I know now.
