タンザニアの困ったこと　その1 ～When I am puzzled in Tanzania No. 1～

私的にタンザニアの困ったこと　その1

　タンザニア渡航が近づいており、タンザニアの人に会えること、美味しいフルーツを食べられること、もちろん、タンザニア養蜂の立ち上げを前進させられること、楽しみなことが沢山あります。しかし、その一方で困ったなあ…ということも正直に言うとあります…。今日はそんな困ったなあ案件をご紹介します。

タンザニアの困った案件　その１は、これは私だけではないかもしれませんが、マラリア。

　マラリア原虫を持った蚊に刺さされることで発症する感染症です。発症ケースの多いタンザニアで発症した場合、早期に適切な医療処置を受けられれば問題ないと現地で聞きましたが、日本で発症したり、現地で発症しても病院に行けなかったりすると最悪の場合死ぬケースもあるそうです。初渡航する前は、虫刺されが死につながるとまで思考が及ばず、現地にてJICAさんのブリーフィングを受け、死が急に目の前に現れてしまったことに驚きと恐ろしさを感じました。幸いにも100均で買った虫よけリングを常時装備し、虫刺されは0でした。

　現地のタンザニアの人たちはマラリアを一度は罹ったことがあるようで、皆さん病院で診察してもらい、薬と水と睡眠で治ったと聞いています。そういう話を聞くと安心はできますが、日本で発症してしまったら怖いなあ…と思うので、今回は、飛行機の受託手荷物に入れられる防虫剤と、虫よけリング、できればマラリア予防薬を持参したいと思います。

When I am puzzled in Tanzania No. 1

As the next visit in Tanzania is approaching, I am excited to… reunite people in Tanzania, have Tanzanian tasty fruits and of course to have our project forward. At the same time, I must encourage myself. Honestly, there are some troubling matters in Tanzania… Today I am going to tell you about one of them.

When I am puzzled in Tanzania No.1 is , which is absolutely not only for me, malaria.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female mosquitoes. At the briefing lecture in the JICA office, I heard those countries with the number of cases have enough medical access and all patients need to do is just to have medical care as early as symptoms begin. Then, hopefully patients will recover. However, when symptoms begin in Japan or even begin in those countries but not having enough nor delayed treatment than it should be, the worst case, malaria brings death. Till my first visit, I had never imagined one bite would lead to death. The briefing really upset me.

In fact, I always wore bracelets to repel mosquitos, which I had bought in Japan at a 100 yen store. Amazingly it worked well and I hadn’t been a victim of mosquitos at any time! Yey!

As far as I hear Tanzanian people seem to have been diagnosed with malaria disease at once and recovered by medicine, water and sleep. Although their experience eases me to some extent, the threat that symptoms start in Japan remains. I am sure I will get a bottle of insecticide, the insect-repellent bracelets, and if possible, anti-malaria medicine for the next.
