タンザニアにおけるスワヒリ語
今回はタンザニアの共通語であるスワヒリ語についてお伝えします。タンザニアに行くと伝えた後、どこ？なにがあるの？の質問の次に、何語を話すの？という質問が結構あるあるだったりします。スワヒリ語は、タンザニアの他にケニアやウガンダなど東アフリカ沿岸地域で使われていますが、今日はタンザニアにおけるスワヒリ語をご紹介します。
タンザニアは、多民族・複合言語国家で126の言語が使用されており、東アフリカの中では一つの国の中で使用されている言語が最も多い国です。お互いの意思疎通を図るために共通言語として役立つスワヒリ語は、タンザニア人口の約90％の人が使用しています。このうち約10％の人がスワヒリ語を第一言語として習得し、残りの人たちは小学校入学時にスワヒリ語を学ぶことになります。大半の小学校は各部族で使用されている言語で学ぶことが認められておらず、スワヒリ語で授業を行っており、教科として部族の言語を学ぶこともありません。テレビやラジオ、新聞にはスワヒリ語が用いられており、国会議員の立候補者もその部族の言語を使うことが禁止されています。こうした政策がそれぞれの民族を団結させ、どの部族にも平等な国家を形成するための一翼を担っているように感じられます。

こうした政策は初代大統領のニエレレ氏によるもので、タンザニア独立以来一貫して取られている政策です。ニエレレ氏の写真は、公官庁のオフィスはもちろんホテルなどの民間企業にも掲揚されていました。ニエレレ氏の偉業はそれだけではないと思いますが、それほど偉大なんですね。次回は、このスワヒリ語の世界を少し覗いてみましょう。

Swahili Language in Tanzania
This time let me tell you about the common language in Tanzania, Swahili. This question would be second one that I usually get, perhaps the first would be what to see?, when I say, “I’ll visit Tanzania”: Which language is spoken there…? Swahili language is spoken in Tanzania as well as Kenya, Uganda and some other countries in East Africa. Today, I’m going to tell you Swahili language in Tanzania.
There are 126 languages used in Tanzania, and the country has the most linguistical diversity in East Africa. It is Swahili language with vast majority of speakers around 90% of Tanzanians that enables to the nations to communicate each other. Only about 10% of the speakers learn Swahili as their mother language, while left about 90% starts to learn in primary school because all classes are taught in Swahili. On the other hand, those ethnic community language is not officially permitted to use as instruction nor taught as a subject. No ethnic language radio, newspaper nor TV-programs are created, Swahili only. Even the political candidates are banned to use their own ethnic language. These seem to help an ethnic diversity country united and, in terms of tribes, with fair and equal society in place.

These policies were put in place by the first President Nyerere, and have been consistently in force. His portraits have been raised at not only government offices, also private companies as well as hotels. This is how I’ve got to know how Tanzanian people admire himself and what he had done. Next time let’s learn Swahili language a little bit.
